New Rochelle, NY – The Cardinals split their doubleheader with Monroe University on Saturday. Both games were very high scoring, with the Cardinals falling 17-5 in Game 1, but they bounced back for a 16-13 win in Game 2.
Game 1
The Monroe Mustangs put Game 1 away early with nine runs in the first three innings. Catonsville responded with three runs in the third inning, but the pitching couldn't hold down the Mustangs. Monroe University added eight runs in the fourth inning, leading to the game ending in the 5th inning.
It was a tough showing for the Cardinals, but the offense did tally three homeruns. Riley Nace, Cassidy Barth, and Kayla Musgrove all had solo shots for Catonsville.
Game 2
Game 2 was another high-scoring game, but the Cardinals managed to out-hit the Mustangs in their win. Catonsville was down multiple times in this game, but they fought back each time. The Mustangs got an early lead with three first inning runs, but the Cardinals responded with five of their own in the second. Monroe University then added seven more runs to take a 10-5 lead, but the Cardinals responded once again with six runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning.
The Cardinals received contributions throughout the lineup, with seven different players driving in runs and eight players recording a hit. Alana Watts had another big game, going 3-5 with three RBIs. Kayla Musgrove added to her strong performance in Game 1 with another home run in Game 2, driving in three runs on the day. Cassidy Barth also hit another home run as well.
On a day when the pitching staff struggled for both sides, Makayla Elligson did a solid job in relief. She pitched four innings in relief allowing just three runs.
