Game 1
College of Southern Maryland
CCBC Catonsville's softball team erased a 4-3 deficit to return to the win column on Wednesday, defeating the College of Southern Maryland 12-4.
After trailing for much of the contest, the Cardinals erupted for nine unanswered runs to get the mercy-rule win.
Catonsville struck first when sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Brooks (Hammond) singled to right field, driving a run home. After the Hawks tied the game in the third, Brooks smacked a two-run homer into center field to give Catonsville the 3-1 lead.
Southern Maryland responded in the top of the fourth with three runs, taking a 4-3 lead. Catonsville responded in the bottom of the inning the only way they know how: Home runs galore!
The Cardinals retook the lead when sophomore first baseman Felicity Voss (Catonsville) smacked a two-run homer over the center field wall. Four at-bats later, freshman third baseman Tori Bache (Northeast) send a three-run home run to the same location, giving Catonsville an 8-4 lead.
Freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) kept the momentum going with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 10-4. Needing just two more runs for a mercy-rule win, the Cardinals turned to Bache, who smacked a double to left-center field, bringing home the final two runs to complete the 12-4 victory.
Bache finished the contest with a double, a home run, and five RBIs. Voss scored a home run and two RBIs, while Brooks had a home run and three RBIs. Gross recorded two stolen bases and two RBIs.
