Cardinals fall to 4-8 after narrow 78-72 loss against Frederick
The Cardinals men's basketball team are now 4-8 on the season after suffering a tough 78-72 loss against Frederick Community College on Saturday.
Four of Catonsville's starters recorded double digit points, sophomore Keith Bullock (Cardozo) finishing with a double-double of ten points and ten assists, and sophomore guard/forward Maurice Smith (Newton) putting up 15 points.
Despite the Cardinals maintaining a four-point lead for the majority of the first half, the Cougars would go on a 6-1 run in the final minute of the period, taking their first lead since the first minute of the game.
The Cougars sprang into life after the halftime break with freshman forward Jaden Arrington (Frederick) running right through the Cardinal's defense to lay the ball up and in just four seconds into the half. Freshman forward Kaleb Gray (Friendship Collegiate) would quickly answer with his own lay up for the Cardinals, but Frederick would go on another 6-0 run to take an eight-point lead. This lead would not last for long. After a back-and-forth battle near the halfway point of the period, the Cardinals would go on a 9-0 run themselves, freshman guard Iru Pettis (Randallstown) putting up six points during the run.
For the remaining ten minutes of the game, the teams would continue going back and forth, but the Cougars late scoring run and five-point lead in the last 26 seconds proved too much to overcome for the Cardinals and the game would end 78-72 in favor of Frederick.
Catonsville returns home this week as they are set to face Hagerstown Community College Thursday night at 7pm.
