Weaver's Home Run Advances Cardinals to Semifinals!

CCBC Catonsville's softball team nabbed their third straight postseason victory last Friday, defeating the College of Southern Maryland 7-6 in the quarterfinals of the Region 20 Division II tournament.

A clutch seventh-inning home run by sophomore second baseman Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) propelled the Cardinals through to the semifinals.

Catonsville initially trailed 2-0 entering the third inning. After freshman third baseman Rachel Cox (Dundalk) singled, freshman first baseman Sarah Devilbiss (Fairfield Area) smacked a homerun to tie the game.

The Hawks immediately responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI single to retake the lead. Catonsville would respond in the top of the fifth with RBI singles by Devilbiss and freshman catcher Hailey Seaton (Liberty). The Hawks answered with back-to-back homeruns to take a 5-4 lead.

The top of the sixth would see another Cardinal rally. Sophomore left fielder Mimi Truong (Western Tech) smacked an RBI double to tie the game. Rachel Cox then singled to bring Truong home and give the Cardinals the lead. Southern Maryland responded with another home run to tie the game mat 6 a piece.

Just two batters into the top of the seventh, Weaver smacked her homerun to give Catonsville a 7-6 lead. Unable to extend that lead any further, the Cardinals would turn to their defense to get the job done. Southern Maryland would respond with two singles to get two on, but one of those runners was caught stealing. With one out, Cardinals sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Rishel (Leonardtown) struck out the next batter. Hailey Seaton immediately threw the pitch to third to catch the remaning runner stealing, ending the game with a fantastic double-play.

Catonsville will face defending Region 20 champions Potomac State in the semifinals on Saturday.
