Cardinals Open Series Against Howard with Big Win

The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals played a familiar Region XX opponent in the form of Howard Community College on April 22. Through a star-studded fielding performance and a pair of late-game runs, the Cardinals would leave this game with a well-deserved win.

The Cardinals' high-level field performance was led by none other than freshman pitcher Kayleigh Rishel (Leonardtown). Rishel threw five strikeouts and earned herself a win through seven innings. The field started out slow, allowing one hit, a run, and an unfortunate error. After this, the Cardinals managed to step up majorly and only allow three more hits and no more runs for the remainder of the game.

The Cardinals' batting unit would get off to a positive start, as sophomore outfielder, Abigail Heagy (Eastern Tech) would step to the plate and turn the Cardinals' first hit of the day into a home run straight down center field. A 1-1 game at the bottom of the sixth inning desperately called for the perfect opportunity to add another Cardinals score to the board. Heagy would answer the call and hit a quick double past second base. Then freshman second basemen Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) would sneak in at home base after a wild pitch, giving the Cardinals the lead for the very first time. Going into the seventh inning, freshman shortstop Morhgan Gross (Howard) would be the second Cardinal to score. Heagy would take it back home one last time, with the assistance of a double from freshman third baseman Tori Bache (Northeast).
