Cardinals Surrender Late Goal to Howard in Tough Loss

The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals men's soccer team lost their second straight game on Tuesday, falling to rival Howard 1-0.

Playing in sweltering conditions, the Cardinals defense held a hungry Howard offense in check for most of the contest, finally surrendering a goal in the closing minutes. Despite the loss, the Cardinals (1-2) have now held two of the best schools in Region 20 to just one goal each.

Catonsville's defense was the highlight of this match, keeping Howard scoreless in the first half. It's the third straight shutout first half the Cardinals have played this year. Leading the charge was freshman goalie Franklin Duarte (Meade). Duarte made six saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

The second half saw Catonsville's offense go on the attack. The Cardinals had several good looks deep in Dragon territory, but were unable to connect on any shots. Freshman midfielder Aziz Moty (Sherwood) led the Cardinals with two shots, bringing his season total to six. Both clubs' aggressive style of play contributed to the lack of scoring, as 42 total fouls were committed and five yellow cards were displayed.

The Cardinals appeared to break through with ten minutes to go when sophomore midfielder Cherif Haidara (Sainte Marie) scored on a header, but a goalie interference penalty overturned the score. Howard responded with a flurry of attacks, including a missed penalty kick. The Dragons finally scored with two minutes to go, ending the contest with a 1-0 victory.

Despite the gut-wrenching loss, the Cardinals once again held a top school in Region 20 to a single goal. The Cardinals have allowed just three goals all season, compared to 25 goals in three games last season. It speaks volumes of an improved defensive performance that can only get better.
