Men's Lacrosse Sophomore ceremony night

The CCBC Cardinals Mens’ Lacrosse team ended their 2018 season on Friday evening at home against Anne Arundel Community College. The Cardinals honored the two sophomores on the team with a pregame ceremony. The Cardinals also had a ceremony at halftime to honor the donors for their turf field at the Athletic Complex.

The Cardinals lost to Anne Arundel 26-1 on Friday evening to end their season with a record of 0-9. Scoring the only goal for the Cardinals was freshman attacker RaeKwon Hinton.

The two sophomores that were honored pregame were attacker Justin Coleman and goalie William Wright.

At halftime, CCBC President, Dr. Sandra L. Kurtinitis and the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals Athletic Department honored the nine donors that helped pay for the new turf field at the athletic complex.

The nine special people that were honored during the ceremony were Greg Hart, Bob Barry, Steve Pappas, Dennis Kelehan, Bill Packo, Phil Mooney, Bob Sopka, Dave Mintzer, and Gary Keedy.

Greg Hart is an alum of the Cardinals lacrosse team from 1974-75 and played a key role in securing a big part of the funding from the CCBC Foundation. Along with helping the Cardinals receive funding from the CCBC Foundation, Hart made a personal donation to this project.

Bob Barry is the Chief Executive Officer of the Greene Turtle Corporation, which is the corporate partner of the turf field as well as the scoreboard.

Steve Pappas played along with Hart from 1974-75 and was inducted into the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. He is a founder and local operator of the Greene Turtle franchise and assisted in the Greene Turtle corporate sponsorship as well as making a personal donation to this project.

Bill Packo played for the Cardinals from 1975-76 and assisted in the Greene Turtle corporate sponsorship.

Dennis Kelehan also played for the Cardinals in 1974-75 and was inducted into the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. He was an assistant coach for the Cardinals for the 1977 season and made a personal donation to this project.   

Phil Mooney was the first men’s lacrosse coach for the Cardinals from 1969-75 and has been a member of the CCBC Catonsville athletic department for the last 49 years. He was inducted into the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015 and he is on the board of the CCBC Foundation- Catonsville. Mooney was essential in making this project possible and was the key figure in arranging the ceremony to honor the donors.

Bob Sopka was the first assistant coach under Mooney and was the second head coach in program history from 1977-79. He was a CCBC Catonsville faculty member for 33 years as a physics professor from 1969-2002.

Dave Mintzer was the most successful head coach in program history leading the Cardinals to more than 200 wins. He was the head coach for three NJCAA Final Four appearances over his 25-year tenure from 1982-2006 and was inducted into the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Gary Keedy was the CCBC Athletic Director from 1983-93 was responsible for the first phase of the stadium renovations which included the installation of lights and the first permanent scoreboard. He was a member of the CCBC Athletic department from 1969-2003.
