Cardinals Fall Behind Early, Unable to Comeback Against Jamestown
In their first game of the Jim Riggs Classic at Jamestown Community College, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals fell 85-65 to the Jamestown Jayhawks last Saturday.
Despite a 21-point performance from sophomore guard Jalen Yates (Baltimore City), the Cardinals could not escape an early deficit, suffering their sixth loss of the season.
The Cardinals would take the lead at the start thanks to a quick layup by sophomore guard Maurice Smith (Newton), and extended that lead to 4-1 after two minutes. It would be their only lead of the game, as the Jayhawks would jump out to a 25-7 lead halfway through the half. Despite three three-pointers from Yates, the Cardinals were unable to catch up, trailing 44-18 at halftime.
The second half would go much better for the Cardinals, as they outscored the Jayhawks 47-41. However, Jamestown kept the lead at 20 or more points throughout the half, so no matter how much the Cardinals chipped away, they couldn't make a sizeable dent in the lead. Yates and sophomore guard Keith Bullock Jr. (Cardozo) did manage to put up double-digit points, but it wasn't enough to beat the Jayhawks.
Yates finished the evening with 21 points off six three-pointers and a perfect evening at the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Christopher Johnson (St. George's High) added 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Bullock scored ten points, four rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore guard Nicholas Moore (Hammond) was the leading scorer off the bench, dropping six points.
