Cardinals Men Lose to Harcum College in Season Home Opener

The Cardinal's men's basketball team fought hard against a tough Harcum Bears side on Tuesday in their regular-season opener. Harcum proved to be too much for Catonsville, however, as the team would lose 104-67 at the end of regulation time. The Cardinal's team has some early season rust to knock off if they want to rebound from this tough loss.

Within the first minute, the Bears would jump out to a 4-0 lead thanks to Harcum sophomore guard Amahrie Simpkins (Brooklyn, NY). The Cardinals would keep the game close for the first half of the period, staying within ten points of the Bears until the 10-minute mark when sophomore forward Justin Owens (Brooklyn, NY) made a three-pointer. This was when momentum switched completely to Harcum. Following four additional three-pointers from the Bears and a dramatic three pointer to beat the buzzer by Cardinal's freshman forward Kaleb Gray (Washington, D.C.), the half would end with the Cardinals down 61-32 at the end of the half.

Despite the deficit, sophomore guard Maurice Smith (Owings Mills, MD) was a bright spot in the team in the first half, recording eight points and going 4-8 from the floor.

Smith (Owings Mills, MD) would come out firing after halftime, putting up six points and going 3-4 on field goals in the first four minutes of the second period. Sophomore guard Jalen Yates (Baltimore, MD) would also find a hot hand, draining two three-pointers and making both free throw attempts in the first ten minutes of the period.

The final ten minutes of the game were dominated by Harcum, outscoring Catonsville 30-16 during that span.

Catonsville will look to put this game behind them and go again on Thursday when they host the Falcons from Lackawanna College at 7:00pm!
