Lady Cardinals Drop Season Opener to Hawks

CCBC Catonsville women's soccer lost its season opener Tuesday afternoon 10-0 to College of Southern Maryland Hawks at home at Joseph P. Murray Stadium.

"I can't say it was unexpected," said Cardinals head coach Karmo Bolay. "I can say that we have a long way to go."

The Cardinals (0-1) fell victim to a barrage of Hawks goals in the first half, falling behind 5-0 in the first 20 minutes.

Southern Maryland (1-2) scored its first goal in the 8th minute off sophomore striker Emily Bullis.

Catonsville would have a chance to equalize immediately after play resumed, but freshman midfielder Marlyn Ordonez-Martinez's shot was wide.

The Hawks added six more goals in the first half to take a 7-0 into halftime.

"Marlyn did a great job today," said Bolay. "Our center backs also performed well."

The Cardinals had two chances to get on the board in the first half.

Freshman midfielder Krista Wagner broke loose from her defender and sent a shot right into the hands of Hawk's freshman goalkeeper Ashley Cox in the 26th minute.

In the 31st minute, Martinez had a wide-open net, but her shot bounced off the goal post into the hands of Cox.

"At halftime, we got a little more organized," Bolay said. "We moved some players around and saw a bit more aggressiveness."

In an abbreviated second half, the Cardinals gave up three more goals, with the Hawks' Haley Bullis leading the way with five goals total in the game.

The score could have been worse, but Cardinals' freshman goalkeeper Samisha Connor made 11 saves on 21 shots on goal.

"Our goalkeeper had a good game," said Bolay. "You can tell by just looking at the score line."

The Cardinals had one last chance in the 84th minute to prevent a shutout, but Martinez was denied once again by Cox.

"We're looking forward to just developing throughout the season now," said Bolay. "Our main goal is to keep pushing."

The Cardinals next game is Saturday, as they hit the road to face Lackawanna College.
