Late Fuel Propels Lady Cardinals Over Hagerstown for Third-Straight Victory

Catonsville, MD- A thrilling game between the CCBC Catonsville Lady Cardinals basketball team and the Hawks of Hagerstown Community College came to a clear one-sided finish.

Although the Cardinals had the final say in Wednesday night's away contest, winning 79-66, it was a back-and-forth contest throughout the first 30 minutes of play. Each team had the lead to end two of the four quarters, as this game featured 11 lead changes and six separate times with a tied score.

Chante Weedon set the tone for the game, causing a Hagerstown turnover within the game's first 30 seconds, capping off the fast break with a successful layup to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. Catonsville would extend their opening run to 7-0 before the Hawks made their first bucket.

Hagerstown refused to lie down early, however, as they went on a 13-5 run to take a 13-12 lead to create the electric matchup between the two competitive squads. After the first quarter, the Hawks led 18-16.

Catonsville then led the scoring in the second quarter 22-17 to take a 38-35 advantage over Hagerstown, aided by three drained shots from behind the arc from a red-hot Myah Savage, who led the Cardinals with 18 points at the midway point.

Scoring was spread out for Catonsville in the third quarter, led by Jasmine Johnson's six points off the bench. Though, the Hawks outscored Catonsville by four points in the quarter to take a 54-53 lead heading into the final lap.

The Cardinals had no plans of losing this battle, however.

Weedon took over as the hot hand, scoring 17 points in the game's final 10 minutes to lead Catonsville's explosive offense to a 26-12 fourth-quarter run and a well-earned third-consecutive victory.

Weedon – with her fiery final quarter – led the Cardinals with 25 points, while also contributing six rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Savage had 23 points of her own with an additional seven assists. Johnson successfully came off the bench to score 14 and grab eight boards. Theresa Sherrill led the team with nine rebounds. As a whole, the Cards shot 56.7 percent from the field.

Up next on the schedule, the Lady Cardinals travel to Arnold on Saturday, February 2, to take on the Riverhawks of Anne Arundel Community College at noon.
