Propst tosses perfect game, hits two homers in Cardinals softball's home-opening sweep

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals softball team came home from Myrtle Beach looking to start their Maryland season off with a bang, and they did just that. Wednesday afternoon, they held a home doubleheader against the Raptors of Montgomery College, outscoring them 21-1 over both games, completing the home-opening sweep. The Cardinals advance to 8-4 on the season, while the Raptors fall to 0-2 to begin the year.

Game 1: Cardinals 11, Raptors 1: WP – Marissa Heuer (3-1), LP – Abbey Kitchelt (0-1)

  • Right-hander Marissa Heuer was in complete command of the game from start to finish, giving up one unearned run with six strikeouts over the game's five innings. She gave up just one hit and one walk on the afternoon.
  • Right fielder Alexa Holderfield kicked off the Cards' scoring with an RBI double that chalked the left-field line in her first at-bat.
  • Backstop Leah Propst added a run to the scoring with a scorching line-drive single to left field to score Holderfield in the third inning.
  • Amy Propst, Alleshia Pullen, and Heuer all hit homers for CCBC Catonsville, accounting for nine of the 11 runs scored. Pullen's long ball was a grand slam to center in the third.

Game 2: Cardinals 10, Raptors 0: WP – Amy Propst (2-1), LP – Abbey Kitchelt (0-2)

  • Amy Propst didn't allow a single batter to reach base, tossing a perfect game.
  • In the bottom of the first, the Cardinals kept their momentum from the last game, whopping three homers: Leadoff home run for Alleshia Pullen, a solo shot to left field for Casey Turner, and a three-run dinger off the scoreboard in left-center for A. Propst.
  • Hailey Manning and Marissa Heuer joined in on the multi-RBI party, collecting two and three, respectively.
  • The Cards' defense played flawlessly behind A. Propst to record 13 of the total 15 outs.
  • A. Propst was very pitch-efficient in her perfect game, throwing 26 strikes over just 34 pitches (76.5 percent), averaging only 2.27 pitches per hitter.

STANDOUT STATS

  • Al. Pullen and A. Propst each hammered two home runs for CCBC Catonsville on Wednesday afternoon. These were A. Propst's first two homers on the year, and Al. Pullen doubled her total up to four on the young season.
  • Holderfield was a doubles machine, lining three doubles in four at-bats, giving her eight so far this year.
  • Heuer and A. Propst combined to give up just one hit and zero earned runs over 10 innings in the Cardinals' sweep of Montgomery College.
