Softball Home Opener

The CCBC Catonsville Lady Cardinals softball team had their home opener on Friday March 16, against Norwich University for a doubleheader on a cold afternoon. They won both games to improve their record to 6-2 on the season.

The Lady Cardinals started their season in North Carolina splitting the two doubleheaders against Louisburg College (March 3rd) and Patrick Henry Community College (March 4th). They swept the doubleheader on March 9th against College of Southern Maryland before returning to Catonsville for the matchup against Norwich.

In the first game, Kelly Krizmanich (Paint Branch) was making her second start of the season after making her season debut in the first game of the season for the Lady Cardinals. She gave up four runs in her two and two-thirds inning and left fielder Amy Propst (Baltimore, MD) came in relief. She pitched the remainder of the game giving up no runs or hits.

Propst was credited with her fourth win of the season, which leads the team and tied for most wins in the Maryland JUCO conference. She has been doing similar damage on offense as she leads the conference in RBI’s at 21.

The Lady Cardinals offense had to come from behind in the game as they were losing 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. They scored three runs in the inning and went on to win their fifth game of the season, 5-4.

The stars on offense for the Lady Cardinals win were third baseman, Sarah Heagy (Eastern Tech) and first baseman, Hailey Manning (Severna Park) who each had two RBI’s in the game. Manning has the fourth most RBI’s in the conference.

The other RBI in the game for the Lady Cardinals came off the bat of catcher Erin Muir (Loch Raven) who also scored the winning run in the game. Muir went 2-3 in the game which improved her average to .622 on the season, which is the second highest in the conference.

The two teams took a break from the windy conditions and came back to play the second game of the doubleheader. Freshman pitcher, Jamie Smith (Arundel High) was making her first career start for the Lady Cardinals and it could not have gone better for her. She pitched all seven innings giving up only two runs and got the first win of her young career.

The Lady Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom half of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead and went on to win the game 6-2.

Heagy and Manning continued to be the stars on offense; Heagy had one triple and two RBI’s in the game, while Manning had two hits and one RBI in the game.

The other runs for the Lady Cardinals came from second baseman, Alexis Sann (North County) and left fielder, Alyson Hoffman (Kenwood) who each had one RBI in the game.

The Lady Cardinals continued their hot streak winning both games of the doubleheader against Frederick Community College on Saturday (17th) and splitting the doubleheader on Sunday (18th) against Lackawanna College.

The Lady Cardinals have the second best record in the Maryland JUCO conference at 9-3 and will look to improve on their record with a doubleheader at Chesapeake College on Wednesday, March 28th.
