Nelson started coaching Track & Field at Fresno City College in 2004 where Head Coach Gary Bluth hired him. Nelson was responsible for the sprints, hurdles and relays events.  In Nelson’s first year, he acquired an experienced group of student-athletes from the valley and out of state.  The workouts and commitment to execute the workouts was a key element Nelson demanded from his athletes. In his first year, two athletes stood out and made the most of their opportunity. Dinah Clark was Nelson’s California Junior College Champion that achieved the highest honor by winning the 100 hurdles in 2005. She would go on to compete at California State University Fullerton on an athletic scholarship and earn her Bachelor’s degree.

Through the years that followed Nelson’s 2005 coaching success, Nelson coached athletes at Fresno City College who won individual conference titles, team conference titles, and Northern California JC titles. The highest team placed 3rd in the California State Junior College Track & Field Championships.

During Nelson’s days at Fresno State, he was a confident sprinter with a quiet swag where his performance spoke for itself. His retired coach, Farley, saw a competitor fearless of the competition and a sponge for knowledge to learn every aspect of his events. Nelson had the opportunity to run with the best in the program during those years. Fresno State Track & Field’s best athletes and school record holders were around to encourage and influence success. The program Hall of Fame talents included Terry Bowen (10.16, 20.68), Robert Foster (13.53) and Anthony Barnes (10.36); each of these talented sprinters ran professionally and competed at elite levels. With the rich talent of past Bulldog athletes to learn from, Nelson thrived and showed leadership by being the anchor leg on the 4 x 100, 4 x 400 respectfully two out the four years. Nelson’s coach knew he could depend on getting the best out of Nelson putting him on the anchor leg for relay duties.

The 1994-1995 Fresno State Bulldog Track season team had the team’s No. 2 time in the 100 meters, a wind-aided 10.68 at the Bob Mathias Fresno Relays. Other notable accomplishments included:

  • The Bulldogs second fastest time in the 200, posting a personal best 21.56 at the Modesto Relays
  • 5th place finish in the 200 (21.56)and 7th in the 100 (10.77) at the WAC Championships
  • Nelson’s personal best 48.00 in the dual meet against Stanford and Cal Poly
  • The team’s best indoor 200-meter time with a PR of 22.01 at the Holiday Inn Classic in Reno, NV
  • Nelson’s PR of 6.49 in the indoor 55 meters at the WAC Indoor Championships.

Nelson’s senior year was one to remember for the program and his coach. All the hard work and patience paid off.  The Indoor Track season personal-best marks were achieved. Nelson ran 6.39 in the 55 meters, 21.81 in 200 meters and led the 4 x 400 team to victories. In the battle of Cal/Nevada Track meet, Nelson ran PB 10.49 100m, 21.25, 4 x 400 relay split 46.0.  During the outdoor season, the 4 x 100-meter relay team went undefeated until WAC championships when Nelson’s team faced conference mates TCU. Nelson achieved his best marks.

San Diego HS: As a Caver, Nelson was an example for his teammates to follow. He competed in track and field and as a wide receiver in football during his career:

  • San Diego track team won the Central League title from 91-93 and won CIF SD section in ’93…was the track and field MVP of his school in 1993
  • He won league championships in the 200 meters in ’91 and ’93, 100 meters and 4 x 400 relay in ’91 and the 4 x 100 relay in 1993; was second in the league in the 400 in ’92 and ’93
  • Finished with personal records of 10.5 in the 100 meters, 21.8 in the 200 meters and 49.00 in the 400 meters.
