ETHAN BUSH ENJOYING START OF 1ST COLLEGE T&F SEASON

ETHAN BUSH ENJOYING START OF 1ST COLLEGE T&F SEASON

The outdoor track and field season is underway, and Head Coach Mark Pryor is pleased by the training and racing from his freshman Ethan Bush.  Coach Pryor noted that these results were expected as Bush ran his first college cross-country season this Fall and gained a solid base of endurance and strength.  Bush continued to train consistently during the winter months. Now as the weather begins to be more favorable outside, training begins to be more intense.  Bush has adapted well and his first two meets are indicative of his hard work.

On Sunday at Goucher College, Bush ran a career-best in the 1500m and then returned to the track just 40 minutes later to compete in the 400m dash.  As a middle-distance runner, it is important to have both speed and strength.  Bush possesses both those abilities and is one of the reasons Coach Pryor recruited him to the CCBC Catonsville campus. Bush was a little worried about the short rest period between the two events, but his coach was confident he could handle it.

Not having run the 1500m or 1-mile event in high school very much, Bush continues to learn the event.  At the University of Richmond, his body was ready but not his mind. The very next weekend at Goucher both his mind and body were ready for the 3¾ laps race over 1500 meters.  Bush was eager to test himself in the 400-meter event (1 lap) and produced his 2nd fastest time ever in the distance with a 00:53.07 clocking.  His career personal best for 400m in high school was 00:52.54.

The plan Coach Pryor scripted for Bush is as follows; gain strength & endurance but maintain his footspeed. It is all in preparation for his main event which is the 800-meter run (2 laps). The goal this season is to help Bush learn how to excel over 1500 meters which will make running the 800-meter event that much easier. So far things are going to plan. Coach Pryor has been patient with Bush's training as he continues to do things he has never done before in T&F.  Coach Pryor has been especially pleased with how Bush has excelled in the weight room.  Having never lifted weights with his lower body, Bush is currently squatting over 200lbs which Pryor notes will help increase his speed.  Once all the components come together from his training, Bush is predicted to enjoy career-best performances in his 3 events (400m, 800m, 1500m).  Time will only tell when; thus why he runs the races.

This weekend, the Cardinal Track & Field team competes at the Towson Invitational in Towson on April 1st.  Freshman Keynaud Randolph is also scheduled to compete with Bush at Towson University.
