Sophomore has breakthrough in 400m event

May 4, 2022 - Lynchburg VA.

The Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Weds in Lynchburg VA was possibly the final meet of Adam Lmansour junior college athletic career. His first year was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His freshman year was riddled with a nagging shin injury with only pool and weight training. 2022 is his sophomore and final year as he's set to graduate with his Associates Degree. Adam earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors with his 4.0 GPA in 2021. But there was still one box not checked.

Adam has run career best in the 100m and 200m events at CCBC Catonsville but not in his specialty event the 400m. Well that was taken care of tonight at Liberty University.

Head Coach Mark Pryor authored Adam's training toward qualifying for the NJCAA Outdoor T&F Championships. Coach Etroy Nelson coordinated Adam's strength/weight training program. All the pieces were in place for a successful year. The shin injury was resolved and the outdoor schedule full of high competitive meets against Division-I schools. At 6:00pm on Weds in Lynchburg, it was 84 degrees and sunny.

Adam opened the season well at Richmond's Fred Hardy Invitational in March so the plan was working well. But in April as a practicing Muslim, Adam had to fast for Ramadan. He could not eat or drink anything from sun up to sun down. That made it hard for Adam's body to perform on a high level in any athletic activity.

Each meet in April, the T&F coaching staff did their best to manage Adam's training around his lack of energy, food iand liquid intake. While his mind was ready and willing, his body could not produce the output. Ramadan officially ended on May 1st. Adam began to eat food, drink water and get rest for his remaining race on May 4th.

Coach Pryor was confident Adam could and would run well. The question would be how well. At Liberty Univ, in the fastest 400m section, Adam was in lane 2 along with three All-ACC performancers from Virginia Tech and Liberty University's best quarter-miler. This was a high caliber field that did not disappoint. Adam started well, kept his focus and mental toughness which put him in a good position entering the final straightaway.

As the first place finisher crossed the line, the clock stopped at :45.87. That let everyone in the stadium know the race was fast. So all those who crossed the line after were hopeful their times were fast too. Adam's best time before this race was :49.96 in high school in 2019. On Weds evening he stopped the clock at :49.43.

While that time is short of the NJCAA National Championship qualifying mark needed, it indicates Adam's body has regained it's strength and his energy levels are rising. With another quality race, he could earn a trip to Hutchinson Kansas at Nationals.
