Cardinals Fall in CCBC Derby

FINAL: CCBC Essex: 9 CCBC Catonsville: 2

On Thursday, September 21st, Catonsville played their sister-school CCBC Essex. It was a tough matchup as Essex is the number one team in Region 20 and has dominated their opponents all season. The Cardinals entered the game 3-4-1 and the Knights entered the game 7-1.

The Cardinals started off strong with a goal by sophomore forward Mike Miranda (Lansdowne) eight minutes into the game. This was set up by a beautiful strike from freshman midfielder Gio Guerrero (North Stafford) that Essex goalkeeper Colton Drought made a great save on. Miranda was able to take advantage and score off the rebound. Essex quickly responded and tied the game in the 12th minute. Essex would end up scoring three more goals in the 1st period taking the momentum with them into the half.

At the start of the second period, Essex came out firing with three more goals in the first ten minutes of the half. The Cardinals were not done fighting however, as Miranda scored again off a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Essex would then go on to score two more goals to finish the game.

The Cardinals defense had their work cut out for them this entire contest. The Knights ended up scoring nine times on 20 shots while the Cardinals scored twice on five shots. The Cardinals look to bounce back against Harcum College after going 0-3-1 in their past 4 games.
