10-man Cardinals Draw to Brookdale 0-0 After Two Overtime Periods
On Sunday, September 11, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals faced off against the Jersey Blues of Brookdale Community College. After a long, rainy afternoon, the match ended in a 0-0 tie after two periods of overtime.
The two teams' defensive performances were the highlight of the afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Austin Thomas (Rosedale, MD) for the Cardinals recorded 9 saves to Brookdale's 15 shots on goal. Brookdale's defense also performed well, only allowing 4 total shots from the Cardinals.
The Cardinals would face their biggest challenge in the 61st minute when freshman midfielder Brendan Hartman (Baltimore, MD) received his second yellow card and was ejected from the game. Despite playing the remainder of the match with only 10 players, the Cardinal's defense held up strong to keep the Jersey Blues from scoring.
At the end of regulation, the teams were tied which meant two periods of overtime were to follow.
The Jersey Blues looked dangerous in both overtime periods, putting up a combined 7 shots and 8 corner kicks. The Cardinal's defense was determined to not let the game slip away from them and stayed strong until the last whistle. Catonsville did not have any shots on goal in the overtime period, much of their focus was defending their own goal. To end the second regulation period, Brookdale's freshman midfielder Kristopher Maza (Howell, NJ) had a huge chance in the 109th minute but sent his shot wide of the Cardinal's goal.
Next up for the Cardinals will be a home conference match against the Trojans of Allegany College of Maryland on Tuesday, September 13 at 5:00 PM.
