Men’s Basketball Scoops Numerous MD JUCO Awards
Ke'Andre Gibson, The Cardinal's star point guard, has been named into the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference first team! He leads the team for total points scored racking up a striking 422 throughout his debut season for the Card's. The sophomore guard has only had three single figure games this year and has hit over 15 points in 17 games, definitely a record to be proud of. His scoring record aside, Gibson also turned provider this season, dishing out an astonishing 228 assists. He gave 88 more than anyone else in the conference. With stats like these it's easy to see why he was named into the Conference first team and helped take the Cardinals into the end of season tournament as the 2nd seed. This was Gibson's first season as a Cardinal and so it's really impressive how well he settled into the team and how quickly he made himself a key player. Our congratulations go out to Ke'Anrde and we're confident that he will continue his great form.
Returning Cardinal Montaque Wright was named into the MD JUCO all-conference second team. He's had an impressive campaign with the Cardinals and has racked up and imposing 1,003 points over two years at Catonsville. Montaque also scored a team high 32 points during a memorable performance against Baltimore City Community College back in January. Additionally Wright boasts the 2nd best points per game percentage in the conference. Last season wright scored an remarkable 601 points and was the teams highest scorer however with the arrival of both Coker and Gibson, Wright has been able to spread the scoring responsibility and its clear the team has benefitted from their teamwork. Wright didn't lose that scoring instinct though as he notched a notable 402 points this season. Congratulations to Montaque on receiving this honor and we hope to be seeing more recognition in the future.
Freshman Everette Coker was also named into the all-conference 2nd team for the first time. This is Coker's initial season as a Cardinal and has already become important to the program. He has a conference leading 3 Point Percentage of 47.3 and both he and Montaque are in the top 5 for number of 3 pointers made conference wide. The young forward truly showed the whole conference that Catonsville's outside scoring was a force to be reckoned with. He also amassed a giant 409 points this season and showed an exciting glimpse of things to come. Congratulations to Everette on an impressive debut season.
As well as three of his players being selected for the all-conference teams, the Maryland JUCO Men's Basketball Coaches Association also recognized Greate White as its 2016-17 Coach of the Year. This was White's second season at the helm for the Cardinals and he has already managed to transform the team into a conference contender. After going 4-10 in conference last season, Greate led his team to an 11-3 record and No. 2 seed in this year's Maryland JUCO Conference Tournament. This award is voted on annually by the conference men's head coaches. Congratulations to Coach White and we look forward to more of the same in the future.
Capping off a week of awards for the Cardinals Basketball team, Jalen Myrie was selected into the Maryland JUCO Conference Basketball Tournament: All-Tournament Team. The tournament was full of tight games and was a great showing for all of the teams involved. Myrie made an impression with 41 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals in the Cardinals' two tournament games. Unfortunately the Cardinals went out after a 67-65 thriller against Baltimore City Community College.
The Women's basketball team also received an award in what was a good season for Cardinals Basketball as a whole. Sophomore Guard, Kai Wyatt was given an honorable mention by the Maryland Junior College Athletics Conference. Wyatt's efforts this season haven't gone unnoticed and so the team's top scorer has deservingly been recognized for her contributions. Congratulations to Kai and we hope to see more of the same from the Lady Cardinals.
