Cardinals crush Wolfpack in doubleheader

Game One

In a dominant performance, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals baseball team comfortably defeated the Westmoreland Community College Wolfpack 13-2 in the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader.

Catonsville outhit Westmoreland 11-3 while recording no errors to the Wolfpack's five. Sophomore pitcher Max Cutts (Olympia) recorded six strikeouts in a complete game.

The Cardinals set the tone at the bottom of the first. Sophomore outfielder Angelo Ramirez (North Atlanta) advanced to first after he was struck by a pitch. Ramirez proceeded to steal second, third, and finally home to put the Cardinals on the board 1-0.

The bottom of the second saw the Cardinals' entire lineup get a chance to hit against the Wolfpack. An RBI single by sophomore shortstop Orlando Perez Jr. (Winter Park) began the avalanche of runs. Sophomore outfielder Roman March (Franklin) smacked a home run out of the park to drive in two more runs, making it 4-0. Then, sophomore third baseman Alex Elliott (River Hill) decided to get in on the fun. Elliott hit an RBI single to make it 5-0, then stole home to add a sixth run. An RBI double by freshman catcher Tony D'Angeli (Atholton) completed the scoring outburst.

The Cardinals extended the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the third, as March hit a sac-fly to left field that brought home freshman catcher Lexies Calderon (Poinciana). Westmoreland finally responded in the top of the fourth, adding a single run to make it 8-1.

Catonsville responded with another scoring outburst in the bottom of the fourth, adding five more runs to make it 13-1. D'Angeli kicked off the inning with an RBI single that made it 9-1. An error by Westmoreland's catcher allowed two more runs to score, extending the lead to 11-1. Calderon and March both contributed with RBIs to close out Catonsville's scoring. By this point, the mercy rule had been put into effect, ending the game after the fifth inning. The Wolfpack added one last run off a wild pitch before grounding out to end the game.

Calderon finished the game as the leading hitter for Catonsville, hitting three doubles and an RBI. March had four RBIs, plus a home run. D'Angeli contributed a pair of RBIs as well. The Cardinals combined for seven stolen bases, three coming from Ramirez.

Game 2

During the second game of our double header, the Catonsville Cardinals outhit Westmoreland County 11-1 in this 5-inning slugging fest. Through five innings the Cardinals held the Wolfpack to one hit.

Our pitcher for the game, Dan Delany (Port St. Lucie), was on fire the whole game only letting up one hit which came in the top of the fifth inning. He threw a total of 87 pitches the whole game with 52 of them being strikes and only 35 balls. To add to the 11 hits that the Cardinals put up on the board, they added 12 runs to that as well.

In the bottom of the first, Catonsville started out strong with Roman March (Baltimore, MD) singling. Immediately after, Angelo Ramirez (Atlanta, GA) followed up with a single to right field bringing in March all the way from first base making the score 1-0. That would not be the last run of the first; the Cardinals would eventually add another run in the bottom of the first inning making the score 2-0.

In the second inning, Delany had three batters come up to the plate and all three were putout, making that a 1, 2, 3 inning. Throughout this game, Delany had a total of three innings were the Wildcats went three up and three down.

After adding another run in the second inning, the Cardinals topped off with an amazing nine run in the third inning; they were able to bat around the whole entire lineup. Jordan Brock (Clermont, Fl.), Caleb Bailey (Severn, MD), and Tony D'Angeli (Columbia, MD) all doubled in this inning helping out the Cardinals with adding those nine runs on the board.

This is the third game in a row where the Cardinals have put up ten or more runs in a game! The final score of this game was 12-0. This is the Cardinals second shut-out of the year. Catonsville is now 9-11 overall, with a 4-4 conference record riding a three-game winning streak.
