Baseball snaps losing skid by sweeping doubleheader against Cayuga

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The CCBC Catonsville baseball team played in a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend against Orange County on Saturday and Cayuga on Sunday. The Cardinals went 2-2 in those games, sweeping the doubleheader against Cayuga on Sunday afternoon. The season record stands at 9-8 for the Cardinals and they improve to 6-2 at home this season.

Saturday Game 1: Orange County 8, CCBC Catonsville 5: WP- Travis Grogan (1-0), LP- Travis Weaver (2-3)

  • The Colts jumped out to an 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals put together a three-run lead in the seventh, but they were not able to overcome the early deficit.
  • Travis Weaver labored through five innings giving up just five hits and fanning seven.
  • Hunter Reeling had a multi-hit game for the second straight game, both hits were doubles.
  • Dwayne Thomas drove in two runs to lead the Cardinals offensively. 

Saturday Game 2: Orange County 17, CCBC Catonsville 13: WP- Adam Blakesley (1-0), LP- Alex Bolton (1-2), SV- Noah Reyes (1)

  • The bats came out firing for both teams in game two on Saturday.
  • After the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the first, the Colts put together 14 runs in the next three innings to take command of the game.
  • The Cardinals rallied in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within one of the Cardinals, but Orange County scored three in the top of the sixth inning to hold on to sweep the doubleheader.
  • Alex Bolton battled for 61 pitches in 2.1 innings, but he was not able to cool the Colts' bats.
  • Offensively for the Cardinals, Trevor Smoot went 3-3 and drove in three runs.
  • Jackson Campbell and Brandon Denis each collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs each for the Cardinals.

Sunday Game 1: CCBC Catonsville 9, Cayuga 6: WP- Andrew Caccamisi (2-0), LP- Adam Lupo (0-2), SV- Moises Aristy Jr. (1)

  • Looking to snap a three game losing skid, the Cardinals' offense picked up where they left off in the second game on Saturday, they scored six runs in the first inning to jump to an early lead.
  • Zeke Maldonado started off the game with a triple and all nine batters came to bat in the inning to provide run support for Andrew Caccamisi.
  • After having a perfect game going into the fifth inning in his last start, Caccamisi was able to get his second win of the season, giving up just two earned runs in four innings of work on Sunday afternoon.
  • The Spartans pulled to within three going into the seventh inning, but Moises Aristy Jr. converted on his first career save opportunity to give the Cardinals their eighth win of the season.

Sunday Game 2: CCBC Catonsville 3, Cayuga 2: WP- Trevor Smoot (1-1), LP- James Roeschlaub (1-1), SV- Moises Aristy Jr. (2)

  • Having used their four front end starters in the last four games, head coach Dan Blue called on the regular closer, Trevor Smoot to make his first career start in game two.
  •  Smoot was dominant tossing three-hitter in five innings and gave up just two runs.
  • Alex Bolton came into the sixth inning to protect the one-run lead and after walking two batters, he was able to get the final two outs of the inning and preserving the lead for the Cardinals.
  • The first run for the Cardinals came on a passed ball, but the exclamation of the game came off the bat of Gabe Andreyev.
  • With a runner on third, Andreyev sailed a ball down the left field line and the ball barely went over the fence to hit his first career home run and increase the lead for the Cardinals.
  • Aristy Jr. came in the seventh inning and tossed a 1-2-3 inning to give the Cardinals their second win of the day.

STANDOUT STATS

  • Travis Weaver drove in two runs over the weekend to increase his season total to 14, which puts him eighth in the Maryland JUCO Conference.
  • Moises Aristy Jr. had a strong showing this weekend both at the plate and on the mound. He improved his on-base percentage to .552, which is sixth best in the conference, he also collected his first two career saves on Sunday.
  • Getting his second win in as many starts, Andrew Caccamisi is tied for ninth for most wins in the conference.
