Freshmen Jamal Portis improve career best in Discus

May 3, 2024 - College Park, MD

The CCBC Catonsville T&F team have been on the road competing against NCAA Division-I and II level competition for the last seven days. Head Coach Mark Pryor knew this time of the year would be critical for his athletes to perform at their best against a high level of competition. On Saturday, April 27th the team traveled to Shippensburg Univ against some of the best Division-II schools. On Weds, May 1st the team traveled to Liberty Univ and faced their highest level of NCAA Division-I competition in Lynchburg Va. On Friday, May 3rd.........the team traveled to College Park MD to compete in their third meet in 7 days. Fatigue was a small factor, but the warm weather and recovery methods helped team members push their bodies to new limits.

Freshman throws specialist Jamal Portis managed to throw well in the discus event producing a personal best of 35.26m (115ft 8in). His technique in that event continues to improve as does the distances he is achieving.

The men's 800m event turned out to be a world-class affair as the winning time was 1:46.69 followed by 1:47.82 and 1:47.96. Sophomore Ethan Bush and freshman Gamaliel Adejo tried to run a little more efficiently in their 800m races as Bush was able to run 2:00.21. In the men's 400m dash, freshman Zion Abdul-Wahid was able to run :49.75.

Head Coach Mark Pryor was pleased with his team's performances considering they only had 2-3 days rest in the last 7 days competing in 3 different states but enjoying the results of running better than or close to what they ever had run before. The team will get some much-needed rest, time in the weight room and training before the season's final regular season meet at Widener University in PA. Expectations are high for the opportunity to run times the team is hoping for in all events.
