Freshman wins at Liberty University Twilight Qualifier

Weds May 1, 2024 - Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty University Twilight Qualifier has been a highlighted event on the CCBC Catonsville T&F schedule since March. Track teams from colleges on all NCAA Divisions (I, II and III) as well as in the Va, NC and SC area all travel to Lynchburg looking for qualifying times for the Championship meets. This event has historically produced fast times and the 2024 edition was no different.

80-degree weather greeted the team upon their arrival with the first event starting as the sun began to set. Head Coach Mark Pryor was excited for his team as everyone competing was in top shape, absent of any injuries and focused.

Freshman Zion Abdul-Wahid has been dropping his times in the 400 meter event since the outdoor season began on March 22nd. At Liberty, Abdul-Wahid had the best start out of the blocks and was in the clear lead at the 300 meter mark. He fought hard down the last 100 meters and hit the finish line with a time of :49.23 which is exactly what he ran 4 days earlier at Shippensburg........this time Zion crossed the finish line in 1st place.

The men's 800m event has always produced fast times as Ethan Bush and Gamaliel Adejo were looking forward to. Bush bolted off the start line and hit excellent splits of :56.3 for 400 meters and 1:26.9 for 600 meters. His last 200m stretch run was hard as he fought off the lactic acid and produced a sub 2:00 time of 1:59.51.

Freshman Gamaliel also charged thru the first 400 meters in :56.4 and then fought off two competitors to win his heat with a new personal best of 2:02.01..........a 3 sec improvement over his previous best of 2:05.37. He learned a valuable lesson in racing tactics and positioning.

Sophomore Keynaud Randolph has been running well since April 20th as he came to Liberty Univ looking to qualify for the NJCAA Nationals in the 1500m run.  Keynaud looked fantastic as he came thru the first 400m in :63 secs and then hit 800 meters in 2:08. He was on the exact pace he needed but the 3rd lap has always been tough for him in this event. Keynaud battled for the next 700 meters but was unable to finish as strong as he needed to. But he walked off the track that night knowing how the pace he needs feels and mentally ready to attack the 1500m event again.

The meet didn't disappoint as the winning times in the men's event were all below the NJCAA Nationals qualifying marks. Here is a link to the results:  https://www.tfrrs.org/results/81336/2024_Liberty_Twilight_Qualifier

The team will return home and compete at near by Univ of Maryland, College Park in the Kehoe Twilight Meet on Friday May 3rd at 5:30pm.
